Run with me in the On Cloudboom Max. This is another one of those shoes that is trying to target the middle and back of the pack. It uses On’s helion HF super foam in a tall stack height configuration with multiple cutouts along the middle of the stack. It does have a plate, but it’s a thick, plastic speedboard. The fit of the upper and the materials used are more forgiving and more durable. And at times, the shoe kind of evokes an older Invincible. But the main sensations I get from this are density and stability.
Now, I not the target market for this shoe, so for testing purposes, I ran my first run in the shoe at an effort that would equate the intended marathon finishing times for this shoe. I ran in this at about an effort I think I could hold for about 4hrs or 4:15.
And at those efforts, the shoe is nice. I like it. But I struggle to see why I should pick this over the Cloudsurfer Max. And if I had to run a 4-5 hour race in an On shoe, I think I’d probably ideally love to run in the now deprecated Cloud Eclipse.
Hopefully, some more miles will provide some clarity. But this kind of shoe continues to be a shoe that I like in concept but don’t love the execution.
