World Championships Marathon Tokyo 2025
This race was moved to start 30 minutes earlier, but the heat and humidity were still oppressive out on the course today. Kobayashi took out the race fast, with the three Americans following close behind. By the 18k mark (it might have been earlier but I next saw the runners at 18k), @susannasullivan4 had taken the lead and continued to run well solo when I saw the runners again at 22k. It was a bit of a surprise to me to see her alone in front, but I was hoping that her last success in the heat meant that maybe she’s just built for this (she finished top American at Worlds in Budapest where the sun and heat were hotter although it was less humid).
@jesstonn followed closely behind in third at 18/22k, and because Jess McClain has also performed well in high stakes, high heat races, I was starting to hope that maybe the US could bring in two podium spots.
@imtinyrik came through the 18k mark a bit after the chase pack, but seemed to have found a small pack of runners to work with.
The last time I saw the runners was at about 40k. Tigst Assefa and Peres Jepchirchir were running stride for stride and shoulder to shoulder. Shortly behind them was Julia Paternain, who secured 3rd place and Uruguays first ever world championship medal in what apparently was only her second time running the distance.
Jess McClain finished 4th, looking strong as she came down the final hill into the last kilometer of the race.
Erika Kemp came in as the final American on what was a challenging race day.
