Stop holding your breath when you swim!
If you feel completely out of breath after just one lap, you are probably making the most common mistake in the pool: holding your breath underwater.
You cannot take a full, relaxed breath if your lungs are already full of stale air when you rotate your head to the side. You need to constantly be exhaling while your face is in the water.
Here is exactly how to fix your breathing rhythm:
The Humming Trick: If you struggle with exhaling, literally try humming underwater. Just grab some water in your hands at the wall and practice a simple hum. It teaches you how to maintain a slow, controlled release of air.
The 51/49 Rule: Do not blow all your air out at once! You want to maintain a steady 51% outward pressure to keep water from rushing up your nose, keeping 49% of your air in reserve.
The Final Push: Right before you rotate your head to breathe, give a little extra push of air out. This fully clears the passageway so you can easily inhale through your mouth as your face breaks the surface.
Once your face goes back under, the steady exhale starts all over again. Master this, and your freestyle will feel effortless!
