Daily DLP: Week 5 vs Cardinals preview, final injury reports Detroit Lions Podcast

The Detroit Lions will beat the Arizona Cardinals and enter the bye at 3-2. Arizona owns the NFL’s worst pass defense by yards per attempt at 8.6 and a 114.9 opponent passer rating, and its offense averages only 4.5 yards per play. Detroit holds the per-play advantage and a cleaner injury outlook.
Will the Detroit Lions beat the Arizona Cardinals before the bye?
Yes, the matchup favors Detroit and the Lions will win. As Jeff Risdon noted, Arizona has allowed at least three touchdown passes in each of its last three games and has surrendered the most points in the league over that span, while Detroit’s offense produces 5.8 yards per play.
Arizona’s per-play profile is decisive. The Cardinals gain 4.5 yards per play on offense, but allow 6.1 yards per play on defense, a league-worst gap of minus 1.6. Detroit sits at minus 0.1, 5.8 on offense and 5.9 on defense. The Cardinals also sit last in yards per attempt allowed at 8.6 and 31st in opponent QB rating at 114.9, compared to the Lions at 7.4 and 110.4. Detroit’s pass rush generates higher sack and quick-pressure rates, which should tilt passing downs. Michael Grey framed it simply, this is a game Detroit is expected to win.
What did the final injury reports change for Detroit’s lineup?
Detroit is largely on schedule, with a few key statuses to track. Lions guard Ben Bartch is out with a foot injury. Lions defensive back Brian Branch and Lions offensive lineman Cade Mays have been cleared and returned to practice but remain out on the PUP list. Lions edge rusher DJ Wonnum carries no injury designation after a back issue.
The offensive line trend is encouraging. Lions guard Christian Mahogany is coming off the best game of his career, and he is settling in at left guard. As stated on the show, having Lions offensive tackle Penei Sewell to his left helps him. Lions guard Tate Ratledge struggled at Carolina, a day complicated by facing Carolina Panthers defensive tackle Derrick Brown and a rookie next to him. Cohesion remains the focus, but Detroit’s interior pass protection improved and should hold up against Arizona’s depleted front.
How vulnerable are the Cardinals right now on offense and defense?
Very. The Cardinals’ offense averages 4.5 yards per play, 31st, and they are dead last in explosive plays, both runs over 10 yards and passes over 20. They lean on outside zone, which stresses lateral movement, but their blocking is compromised. Cardinals tackle Paris Johnson is out. Cardinals cornerback Will Johnson is on IR. Cardinals guard Isaiah Adams is out. Cardinals safety Andrew Wingard is out, with rookie Cardinals safety Tim Demerson available to step in.
Depth issues go further. Cardinals guard Chase Besantis was expected to help but has been sidelined, and defensive tackle Caleb Proctor was lost early. Head coach Mike LaFleur’s group has also dropped three straight since a Week 1 win. The cumulative effect shows up in the numbers Detroit can exploit.
What must Detroit fix from the Panthers loss to control this game?
Set firmer run fits and tackle cleanly. Carolina ran too freely, and Arizona’s outside zone will test edges and pursuit. Detroit must constrict angles, trigger downhill, and finish. The Cardinals’ lack of explosives means sound structure will force long fields and passing downs, where Detroit’s rush advantage and Arizona’s 8.6 yards per attempt allowed should decide it.
Context matters on the season-long stats. As Jeff Risdon pointed out, Detroit’s defense had played 32 more snaps than any other unit before Dallas surpassed that on Thursday, skewing per-play ranks. Even so, this matchup gives Detroit the levers to dictate the game and exit into the bye week at 3-2.
