Bisch and Brown: Lions Collapse in Carolina and Lions-Cardinals Preview

The Detroit Lions are 2-2 because defensive coordinator Collins Sheppard’s scheme is broken, not because the roster lacks talent. The defense has ignored opponent tendencies, surrendered 11 passing touchdowns and 127 points in four games, and forced the offense to play perfect, as the hosts made clear.
What is actually wrong with the Detroit Lions defense?
It is a rules, alignment, and game-plan problem, not a talent problem. As Russell Brown detailed, Carolina repeatedly created free-access throws by motioning to formations Detroit never adjusted to, gifting the slot four uncontested catches in the first half, three in the first quarter and one late in the second.
Linebacker Jack Campbell, Detroit Lions, was asked to run laterally to impossible landmarks while safeties aligned 13 to 15 yards deep. Scott Bischoff emphasized that with the front four generating pressure, the heavy zone approach is untethered to the strength of the defensive line, leaving quick-game windows wide open.
Are coaches preparing for tendencies or adjusting at halftime?
No. As Scott Bischoff noted, the defense ignored known opponent tells, including Carolina’s RPO and quick-game profile that Russell Brown highlighted the week prior, and similar disconnects showed up versus Buffalo. Head coach Dan Campbell has said he wants players to be where they are supposed to be, but the asks are physically unrealistic on several snaps.
Brown cited a nine-game stretch of all negative expected-points defensive outcomes, and through four games this year the defense has allowed 127 points and a 70 percent completion rate. It is not a personnel collapse. As Bischoff put it, the odds that every defender regressed at once are zero. The scheme is the failure point.
How should Detroit adjust for the Arizona Cardinals?
Prepare for motion and tempo, bracket primary threats, and align coverage with the pass rush. Arizona’s offense uses pre-snap motion on 47.1 percent of plays and goes uptempo 7.7 percent of the time, Brown said. Tight end Trey McBride, Arizona Cardinals, wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., Arizona Cardinals, and wide receiver Michael Wilson, Arizona Cardinals, must be accounted for snap to snap.
Arizona rarely blitzes or stunts, which favors quarterback Jared Goff, Detroit Lions. The Cardinals carry a 23.6 percent blitz rate and rank near the bottom in stunt usage, with a 38.2 percent pressure rate. Both teams have allowed 11 passing touchdowns, and YPA data points to a shootout, 9.1 allowed by Arizona and 7.9 by Detroit, with a total of 54.5. Detroit must dump creeper looks, stop seven-yard delayed blitzes, and let the four-man rush work while playing more man on money downs.
Can Jared Goff and the offense carry Detroit this week?
Yes, but they should not have to. Quarterback Jared Goff, Detroit Lions, will get clean pockets against a passive rush, and wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, Detroit Lions, will carve soft zones. Running back Jahmyr Gibbs, Detroit Lions, needs change-of-pace support to avoid unnecessary hits and to sustain pace.
Edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson, Detroit Lions, and safety Kirby Joseph, Detroit Lions, must be put in positions that fit their strengths, not forced into misfit calls. As Brown said, this is a scheme issue. Fix the rules, match coverages to the front, and account for motion, and the defense returns to functional, which is all this offense needs to win.
