The Detroit Lions must lean on a four-man rush on defense and chase 35 points on offense every week. Jeff Risdon's tape study shows Detroit's coverage holds up best in base with four rushing and three linebackers, while Dan Campbell explicitly challenged the offense to hit 35 a game. Brian Branch's return after the bye should help stabilize the slot.
Should the Detroit Lions stop blitzing and play more base?
Yes. As Jeff Risdon noted on the Detroit Lions Podcast, when Detroit rushed four with three linebackers on the field, coverage was the cleanest. Blitzes from depth and in the red zone triggered breakdowns.
Risdon highlighted that the front, led by Detroit Lions defensive tackle Alim McNeil and edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson, generated quick pressure without extra rushers. Detroit Lions linebacker Jack Campbell struggled as a blitzer, and the secondary communication frayed when pressure came late from five yards off the line. Staying in base, sacrificing a tick of speed for assignment soundness, kept structure intact and limited easy throws.
What did Dan Campbell demand from the offense?
Score big. Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell said on 97.1 The Ticket, "they should want to score 35 points a game at a minimum." He is raising the floor and pushing a deep unit to finish drives.
The pieces are there. Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff delivered throws that were left on the field by penalties, a drop, and protection miscues. Detroit Lions right tackle Penei Sewell did not have his best outing, which contributed to disrupted timing. Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs also had a down game. Even with a "worst offensive outing of the season," the design under coordinator Drew Petzing produced open opportunities that were not fully cashed in. Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta extension talks paused, and waiting makes sense while the offense sharpens its identity.
Are explosive plays the missing ingredient?
Yes. As Risdon cited, the Lions rank 12th in explosive plays overall, 7th in runs and 24th in passes. More explosive passes must hit to match Campbell's 35-point bar.
How much will Brian Branch change the defense and when?
Significantly, and soon after the bye. Detroit Lions slot defender Brian Branch is practicing this week, will not play against the Arizona Cardinals, then targets Week 7 after the bye.
Brian Branch reclaims the slot, ending uncomfortable coverage asks for others and improving reactions to quick game and option routes. Even at less than peak, his return raises the ceiling on third down and in the red zone. Detroit will get a needed lift without forcing exotic pressures that have backfired.
What decides Lions vs. Cardinals this week?
Explosives will decide it. The Arizona Cardinals offense ranks 32nd overall in explosive plays, 32nd in runs and 32nd in passes. The Detroit Lions defense ranks 32nd in explosive plays allowed, 31st vs runs and 21st vs passes. Arizona's defense sits 31st overall and 30th against explosive passes.
This is a "something's gotta give" game. The path is clear, hit explosive passes, protect Jared Goff, trust the four-man rush, and avoid blitzes that unravel spacing. If the offense embraces Campbell's 35-point mandate and the defense stays in structure, Detroit controls the matchup.
