Daily DLP: Branch Returns, Laporta Contract Impasse and More - Detroit Lions Podcast

Brian Branch returned to practice for the Detroit Lions, and his post-bye return resets the secondary and the defense tone. Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell highlighted his instinctive, violent play and alignment reliability. Nobody expects him to play against Arizona, setting up Green Bay as the natural target.
How big is Brian Branch’s return for the defense?
It is the week’s biggest defensive development because he adds playmaking and restores order in the secondary. Dan Campbell said it is twofold, there will be some rust, yet Detroit Lions defensive back Brian Branch still brings awareness, violence, and production that lift the players around him by being exactly where he is supposed to be.
As Jeff Risdon noted, the Lions have lacked an enforcer on the back end, and offenses must account for No. 32 on every snap. Brian Branch must cut out the frustration penalties he took before the injury, but his edge helps this unit. Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride, the next opponent’s centerpiece, makes Brian Branch’s imminent return even more important.
When will Brian Branch play again?
Not this week. The Lions have the bye after Arizona, then face Green Bay, and Brian Branch’s timeline aligns with that. He has been designated to return, and the team has 21 days from Wednesday to activate him. Brian Branch thanked the organization for not rushing him back, prioritizing the long term.
Detroit’s defense has been stretched with players out of position, and Brian Branch fixes that by putting teammates closer to their proper roles. That alignment benefit was a clear point of emphasis from Dan Campbell, and it addresses a core reason the defense has struggled.
What happens on the offensive line when Cade Mays returns?
It sparks a real decision. Detroit Lions offensive lineman Cade Mays is back practicing, and Detroit Lions offensive lineman Juice Scruggs has played well in his stead. The current left guard has also performed well, which complicates a simple plug-and-play move.
Depth is a positive, not a problem. As Jeff Risdon framed it, the question is whether you value returning the initial plan or ride the hot hand that has kept the interior stable. Detroit Lions guard Graham Glasgow’s standard from last year was a reference point in the discussion, underscoring how high the bar is for interior consistency and communication.
Is Sam LaPorta really in a contract impasse?
Yes. Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta called it a contract impasse, and Dan Campbell addressed it at the podium. This is a front office and agent matter, and Jeff Risdon emphasized the Lions can afford it. Sam LaPorta is not on the injury report and said he remains optimistic and grateful to the team that drafted him.
There is a gulf between the top five tight end deals and the next tier, which is driving the negotiation dynamics. That gap, more than cap room, is the sticking point. Getting this resolved preserves a core piece of the passing game.
Why Jared Goff matters to pass catchers
Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff gives pass catchers confidence they will be used and fed in a creative offense. That matters in negotiations and future acquisitions, as Jeff Risdon noted during the discussion.
