Dan Campbell must change how the Detroit Lions run their defense now, up to and including a coordinator change, to save a 2-2 season. Detroit has allowed 1,695 yards in four games and players admitted they have no answers. The offense must start fast, but the crisis is preparation and communication.
What is Dan Campbell’s immediate move to save the season?
He must own the defense and deliver clear answers weekly, not platitudes. That means reassessing Lions defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard and simplifying responsibilities. Lions head coach Dan Campbell said, “It’s not good enough right now,” and, “I’m the one who’s gonna get this fixed.” As Michael Grey said on The Grey Area, “Dan Campbell is at an inflection point.”
This is year six, and the roster has championship-caliber offense with enough defensive talent to function. Detroit needs a plan that eliminates communication busts, defines roles for every level, and holds the staff to the same standard as the players. If the answers given from Monday to Saturday do not show up on Sunday, leadership must change.
Why did the defense collapse in Charlotte?
Carolina attacked Detroit’s linebackers with RPO and quick, inside throws, and the Lions’ communication failed. Campbell admitted the Panthers ran “those RPOs early in the game,” and “a little something that they kinda mixed in… more of it than the norm.” That is a self-scouting failure.
Position clarity and communication were missing snap to snap. Lions edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson said he had “no answer.” Lions linebacker Jack Campbell said, “I don’t know.” Michael Grey summed it up, “the lack of answers is everything.” Kelvin Sheppard talked about providing answers for players, “Let’s find solutions. Let’s find answers,” yet the same conflicts in those shallow and intermediate zones reappeared. Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young distributed quickly and cleanly, and Carolina Panthers wide receiver Tete McMillan had a big day because Detroit never took away the first read.
How must the Detroit Lions offense change this week?
Start fast and attack the edges. The defense needs help, but the offense controls tempo and scoreboard pressure. Lions quarterback Jared Goff must get points on the opening possessions, and Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown should be featured early to force lighter boxes and simplify protection.
As Jeff Risdon noted, Carolina’s only intact strength was the middle of its defensive line, yet Detroit kept pounding inside. Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs is a speed threat, so get him outside, stress contain, and make corners tackle. Clean up penalties, including repeated issues with Lions tackle Larry Borom, and stop gifting drives away. Do not chase fourth-and-20 miracles. Take the points, extend the game, and give the defense more at-bats.
What decides Lions vs the Arizona Cardinals?
Fix the quick game and RPO answers on defense, and show offensive urgency from the opening kickoff. Detroit’s defense has yielded 1,695 yards in four games and, as Michael Grey noted, is currently at 31.8 in 2026 for points allowed, with 2020 at 32.4 and 2008 at 32.3. That is the threshold the Lions must beat every week with preparation, not hope.
Opponents will keep targeting the linebackers and seams until Detroit changes the picture and communicates cleanly. If this week in Arizona goes south, Campbell must accelerate staff decisions. If the Lions pair immediate defensive fixes with a fast-start plan on offense, they stabilize the season and reclaim control of the NFC hunt.
