“It hit me like a ton of bricks that morning. I was just having a shower. I just broke down.”
After years of structure, competition and pursuing the next goal, Steve Hooker found the transition out of elite sport more confronting than he expected.
In ‘Where Are They Now’, Steve reflects on the changing mental landscape of his athletics career, the decision to stop competing and the moment the reality of retirement finally caught up with him.
He also shares how his understanding of success has evolved since. Today, fulfilment is less about the achievements and recognition that once surrounded his career and more about the people in his life, what he can do for others, appreciating the everyday and continuing to take on challenges.
Created by Australian Athletics in partnership with Rio Tinto, Under the Surface explores the people, experiences and relationships behind Australian athletics.
