If you feel wobbly in the water or struggle to rotate smoothly, you need to try the 3 Strokes + 12 Kicks drill.
It is one of the best ways to practice balancing on your side, but it comes with a major warning label. ⚠️
Here is how to do it right (and the one trap to avoid):
🏊♂️ The Rhythm: Take 3 normal freestyle strokes, then pause on your side and execute 12 kicks.
🎯 The Benefit: Mixing actual swimming with a long kicking pause teaches you exactly how to hold your balance and find your perfect rotation angle.
⚠️ The Trap: Do not only do this drill! If you overdo it, you will actually train your body to over-rotate, which completely kills your forward momentum in a normal stroke.
🦈 The Hack: Throw on a pair of fins. The extra propulsion makes it much easier to hold your stability in the water while you learn the movement.
