Episode Notes

In this powerful, insightful conversation, Brett Hawke sits down with legendary Hall of Fame coach Don Swartz to revisit his groundbreaking 1983 ASCA talk on "The Quantum Leap," cycle training innovations from the 1970s, the mental side of peak performance, flow states, declaration of intent, and empowering swimmers to achieve beyond their imaginations. Don shares stories from coaching Rick DeMont to world records, founding the Creative Performance Institute, and his lifelong passion for the sport—even coaching seniors and Masters at North Bay Aquatics into his late 70s.

Tragically, Don passed away on February 6, 2026, at age 79 while vacationing in Costa Rica. This episode, originally released in 2023, stands as a beautiful tribute to one of swimming's most innovative and generous minds. His words on confidence, risk-taking, learning from history, and the "easiest" breakthroughs remain as relevant as ever.

Rest in peace, Coach Swartz. Thank you for the leaps you inspired in all of us. 🙏

(Originally aired February 2023 | In memory of Don Swartz, 1946–2026)
