Fifteen seconds down with 600 meters to go is not supposed to be a winning position.
For South Eugene senior and Duke commit Yosuke Shibata, it was how his undefeated fall began. In this installment of our Fleet Feet x Brooks High School Cross Country Series, Dominic talks with the Brooks NIL athlete about how a summer of Achilles and peroneal tendonitis issues turned into the best season of his life.
He explains why his mileage has barely changed since sophomore year, how hours on an Arc Trainer at the local YMCA kept his fitness alive, and how he scouted the final hill at Bob Firman the day before he ran everyone down on it. Yosuke goes back to seventh grade, when he joined track because his friends did, and describes himself now as a runner whose “fitness has finally caught up to my mentality.”
He’s candid about whether the Rose City course was short behind his 14:20. He also breaks down Coach Jeff Hess’s double threshold and critical velocity training, his salt-and-a-banana take on electrolyte powders, and why he rotates his shoes. Then he describes winning the Virginia Showcase while sick, and buried in IB coursework.
When Dominic asks how he beats Marcelo Montecon for a national title, Yosuke keeps it simple: whoever wants it more.
Whatever happens at Balboa Park, Yosuke has already shown how far belief, consistency and a real love of the work can carry a runner, and we can’t wait to watch him chase the rest.
