Inside One of the World's Greatest School Rugby Programs | Paarl Boys High

This week on Coaching Culture, we go inside one of the great school rugby programs in the world: Paarl Boys’ High School, South Africa.

Head Coach Sean Erasmus has spent more than 20 years coaching and leading in school rugby, alongside experience in the professional game. But this conversation quickly becomes about something much bigger than winning rugby matches.

Paarl Boys has produced 21 Springboks, built one of the great rivalries in schoolboy rugby, and operates in an environment where rugby carries enormous expectation. Yet Sean’s philosophy is remarkably simple:

“One day I’m going to be asked about the amount of hearts that I’ve won and not the amount of games that I’ve won.”

We dive into what sits behind a program like this: building culture year after year, developing coaches across 33 teams, managing parents and expectations, helping teenage players deal with social media and professional pressure, creating vulnerability in high-performance environments, and remembering that underneath the jersey these are still young men finding their way.

Sean also opens up about his own son breaking his neck, the impact that experience had on him as a father and coach, and why it reinforced the responsibility coaches carry when other people's sons are placed in their care.
