Campese Ma’afu’s Incredible Road Back to Professional Coaching

From plumber to Fijian Drua coach. 🇫🇯 What a journey.

Campese Ma’afu played 63 Tests for Fiji, represented his country at three Rugby World Cups, and built a professional career that took him around the world.

But when his playing days finished, there was no easy transition into professional coaching.

Campo went back to work. He was plumbing during the day and coaching wherever he could, collecting reps, learning his craft and quietly working towards another opportunity in the professional game.

Now, he’s heading home to join the Fijian Drua coaching team.

This conversation goes much deeper than rugby.

Campo talks about faith, family, sacrifice, representing Fiji, the responsibility that comes with the Ma’afu name, developing young Polynesian players, and why hard work in silence eventually gets noticed.

We also get into the extraordinary story of making his Fiji Test debut against his own brother, who was playing for Australia.

One of my favourite lines from Campo:

“I like to work hard in silence, Ben, and let the success speak for itself.”

A brilliant conversation with a bloody good man.
