What happens when a school doesn’t just want its students to play sport… but wants their experience of sport to be excellent?
In this episode of Coaching Culture, I sit down with Tim Murdy, Director of Sport at Shawnigan Lake School in Canada, to explore one of the most unique school rugby environments in the world.
Tim has spent more than 20 years helping build the sporting culture at Shawnigan, has been recognised with a Rugby Canada Lifetime Achievement Award, and has coached across six World Championships.
We get into why rugby is compulsory for younger students, developing players rather than specialising too early, creating safe but genuinely physical rugby environments, developing coaches, the role of parents, and why excellence isn’t only about winning — it’s about making the experience excellent for every kid.
One of my favourite ideas from Tim:
“The ambition shouldn’t be yours. They need to be the athletes.”
We also talk about why Shawnigan opens its doors to national teams, how those little interactions with elite athletes can shape young people, and why great school sport should leave kids looking back years later thinking:
“Wow, that was awesome. I don’t have an ounce of regret.”
A bloody good conversation about rugby, coaching, culture and what school sport should really be about.
