Japan vs Brazil | Highlights | Women's VNL 2026. The Japanese women's volleyball team, ranked 6th in the FIVB world rankings (as of the start of the match), faced Brazil, ranked 2nd, on Wednesday, July 8th, and lost in sets 1-3 (20-25, 25-19, 19-25, 23-25).
The first set began with a point scored by Mayu Ishikawa with a block touch. However, Brazil scored with blocks and service aces, putting Japan behind 3-7. Japan scored a point with a serve from Yoshino Sato, but struggled against Brazil's serves and couldn't get a side out, allowing Brazil to extend their lead. Haruyo Shimamura's blocks and Ishikawa's spikes were successful, but Japan lost the set 20-25.
In the second set, a dig by Emi Fukutome led to a block by Sato, scoring a point, and a service ace by Yukiko Wada made it 6-3, prompting Brazil to call a timeout. After that, both teams exchanged side-outs, and the score remained 3 points until the middle of the set. Against Brazil's tenacious defense, spikes from Ishikawa and Sato scored points, and Japan won the second set 25-19.
In the third set, Ishikawa scored a service ace, and Wada's back attack tied the score at 5-5, making for a close start. Both teams displayed tenacious defense, but Brazil won a rally to take a 7-9 lead. Brazil scored again in a long rally in the middle of the set, making it 12-15. However, Shimamura's broad attack was successful, and a consecutive break from Shimamura's serve brought the score to 15-16, a one-point difference. But then Brazil scored consecutive points to extend their lead again. Finally, Brazil's quick attack secured the win, and Japan lost the set 19-25.
In the fourth set, Ishikawa scored a service ace to make it 2-0. Sakae Erika raised the ball with her foot and Japan won a long rally. Further service aces from Sato made it 9-5, and Yamada Nichika scored a quick attack to make it 13-8, with Sakae actively using the middle to score points. However, Brazil scored consecutive points with blocks and other plays, putting Japan behind 18-17. Brazil then tied the score, and in the end, Sato was blocked, resulting in Japan losing the fourth set 23-25 ββand ultimately losing the match 1-3 in sets.
The Japanese women's national team will play their next match against Thailand (ranked 21st) on Thursday, July 9th at 19:20.
