Indonesia faced Iran in the quarterfinals of the 2026 AVC Women’s Volleyball Continental Championship on August 28, 2026, at the Tianjin Olympic Center Gymnasium in Tianjin, China. Iran completed an impressive comeback to win the match 3–1, with set scores of 19–25, 25–16, 25–12 and 25–17.

Indonesia started the match brilliantly, playing with confidence and aggression from the opening point. Strong serving disrupted Iran’s reception, while Chelsa Berliana and her teammates consistently found ways through the Iranian defense. Indonesia controlled most of the opening set and deservedly won it 25–19, moving one step closer to a historic semifinal appearance.

The match changed completely in the second set. Iran stabilized its reception, reduced its mistakes and began using its height and attacking power more effectively. The Iranian block became increasingly difficult for Indonesia to overcome, while Iran’s improved defense created numerous transition opportunities. Iran controlled the set and won it 25–16 to level the match at 1–1.

Iran produced its most dominant performance in the third set. Indonesia struggled to maintain its passing quality and attacking efficiency, while Iran controlled the net with powerful attacks and a well-organized block. Iran converted defensive opportunities into points and raced through the third set 25–12, moving one set away from the semifinals.

Indonesia attempted to respond in the fourth set, but Iran remained the more composed and consistent team. The Iranian players handled the decisive moments better, continued applying pressure from the service line and prevented Indonesia from establishing a stable attacking rhythm. Iran won the fourth set 25–17, completing a remarkable 3–1 comeback.

Elaheh Poursaleh was the outstanding player of the match. The Iranian attacker delivered a sensational performance and finished as the match’s leading scorer with 29 points. Her power, consistency and ability to score in important moments played a decisive role in Iran’s recovery after losing the opening set.

Rara and Chelsa Berliana were reported as Indonesia’s leading scorers with 11 points each. Rara’s performance included five service aces and one block, while Chelsa registered three blocks. Ersandrina Devega also contributed eight points for Indonesia.

Iran’s reported starting lineup included Shabnam Alikhani, Fatemeh Manzouri, Zahra Karimi, Elaheh Poursaleh, Fatemeh Khalili, Reihaneh Karimi and libero Negar Hashemi. Khalili also produced a remarkable attack that reportedly reached a speed of 99 kilometers per hour during the opening set.

This victory was historic for Iranian women’s volleyball because it sent Iran into the Asian Championship semifinals for the first time. After losing the opening set, Iran outscored Indonesia 75–45 across the following three sets. The victory also reportedly earned Iran 5.91 world-ranking points, moving the national team from 40th to a historic 37th position with 115.72 points.

Iran advanced to face host China in the semifinals, while Indonesia’s championship hopes came to an end despite an excellent opening set and a determined performance. Indonesia ultimately finished the competition in fifth place, reportedly exceeding its original tournament target.

This quarterfinal was a match of two dramatically different phases. Indonesia controlled the beginning and looked capable of creating history, but Iran responded with stronger serving, better blocking, greater attacking efficiency and superior consistency. Led by Elaheh Poursaleh’s exceptional 29-point performance, Iran completed a memorable comeback and secured one of the most important victories in the history of its women’s national volleyball team.
