Japan vs Poland | Highlights | Women's VNL 2026. The "ACN Volleyball Nations League 2026 Women's Osaka Tournament" is being held at Asue Arena Osaka (Osaka City) from Wednesday, July 8th.
The Japanese women's volleyball team, ranked 6th in the FIVB world rankings (before the match), faced Poland, ranked 5th, on Sunday, July 12th, and won with a set score of 3-2 (20-25, 14-25, 25-19, 25-21, 15-13). This brought their overall record in the tournament to 8 wins and 4 losses, securing their place in the final round.
The first set was a crucial match where the winner would advance to the final round. Japan's first point came from a feint by Yoshino Sato. However, Japan's spikes were unsuccessful, allowing Poland to score consecutive points and fall behind 4-9, prompting Japan to call a timeout. After the timeout, Japan was unable to score any side-outs, and Poland's lead widened further. With a service ace from Mayu Ishikawa, the score became 11-15, prompting Poland to call a timeout. However, Japan was unable to close the gap after that, and Poland won the first set 20-25.
In the second set, Yukiko Wada's spike and Haruyo Shimamura's service ace put Japan ahead 3-1. However, they struggled against Poland's tall blocks, and after the score was tied, Japan's serve reception faltered, putting them behind 8-10. Nanami Seki and Misora Akimoto were brought in as a double substitution, but Poland's momentum remained unchanged, and the score widened further to 11-18. Japan managed to force rallies with tenacious defense, but they couldn't convert them into points, and they lost the second set 14-25.
With their backs against the wall in the third set, Japan found their rhythm in attack, skillfully using block-outs to score points and take a 5-3 lead. Although their opponents later tied the score, Ishikawa disrupted their rhythm with a serve and scored with a back attack herself. Japan continued to disrupt their opponents with their serves and convert those points into points. In a difficult situation, Wada scored, bringing the score to 22-18 as the set neared its end. Finally, a serve from Iwasawa Miku, who was registered as an outside hitter and receiver, gave Japan a break, and they won the third set 25-19.
In the fourth set, with Wada in good form and Ishikawa scoring with a back attack, the score became 4-3. Furthermore, Sato scored two consecutive service aces, and then scored a point from a block touch, successfully breaking serve. Wada then scored another back attack to make it 17-13, and Sato scored a service ace with a net-in. Towards the end, Poland scored a service ace, but Shimamura's quick attack secured the win 25-21, sending the match into a full set.
In the early stages of the final set, Ishikawa and Wada scored to give Japan a 2-0 lead. However, after being tied at 6-6, Japan conceded a break to make it 6-7 and called a timeout. Despite this, Ishikawa scored the team's first block of the match to make it 8-7. Wada then made another block to make it 10-9. Yamada Nichika's serve disrupted the opponent's defense, and Sato scored directly to take a 12-10 lead. Although the score was tied again, Sato's serve went in the net at the end to win the third set 15-13, securing a come-from-behind victory and advancing to the final round.
The final round, which will be held in Macau, China from Wednesday the 22nd, will feature the top 7 teams from the qualifying rounds and the host country, China. The match pairings and order of matches will be decided after all the qualifying round matches have been completed, and will be announced on the website as soon as they are decided.
