Japan vs Taipei | Quarter Finals Highlights | AVC Women's Continental Championship 2026. The "2026 Women's Asian Championship" is being held in Tianjin, China from August 21st (Friday).

The Japanese women's volleyball team, ranked 6th in the FIVB world rankings (as of the start of the match), faced Chinese Taipei, ranked 37th, on Thursday, August 27th, and won in straight sets, 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-13), advancing to the semi-finals.

In the early stages of the first set, Japan took an early lead with a service ace from Yukiko Wada, making it 4-2. Wada then scored with consecutive back attacks to make it 8-4, prompting Chinese Taipei to call a timeout. A block by Maki Yamaguchi made it 10-4, and with some errors from the opponent, Japan extended their lead to 11-4. Chinese Taipei managed to score with a counter-attack from their defense to make it 12-8, but a quick attack by Haruyo Shimamura put Japan back in the lead, making it 16-10. From there, a service ace from Wada and a feint from Yoshino Sato led to consecutive points, making it 20-10. Mayu Ishikawa scored with a two-touch set to make it 24-14 and give Japan set point, and finally, Yamaguchi scored with a quick attack to win the set 25-14.

In the second set, Chinese Taipei scored a series of points with counterattacks, putting Japan behind 1-4. Japan called a timeout, but the match continued at Chinese Taipei's pace. An attack by Wada made it 9-12, and Japan gradually regained momentum. Taking advantage of opponent errors and Wada's attacks, Japan managed to take the lead at 14-13. A quick attack by Shimamura gave Japan a 19-16 lead, and a service ace by Ishikawa made it 22-19. Another quick attack by Shimamura brought Japan to set point at 24-21, and finally, Ayane Kitamado scored from the left to make it 25-21, giving Japan the second set.

In the third set, Japan got off to a good start with a quick attack from Yamada Nichika and a service ace from Ishikawa, taking a 3-0 lead. Japan didn't let up on their attack, and Ishikawa scored consecutive points to extend the lead to 10-4. Shimamura made a block to make it 16-7, at which point Chinese Taipei called a timeout. After that, Shimamura made another block to make it 19-9, and Japan took control of the match. Chinese Taipei fought back with feints and other tactics, but the match continued with Japan leading 22-13, and finally Kitamado scored from the left to make it 25-13. Japan won in straight sets with a set score of 3-0.

The Japanese women's national team will face Thailand (ranked 17th) in the semi-finals on Saturday, August 29th. Please continue to give your enthusiastic support to the Japanese women's national team, who are just two wins away from securing their place in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

"I'm glad we were able to win in straight sets. In the second set, we had a tough start and some difficult moments, but I'm glad we were able to win decisively. In the first and third sets, we were able to play our own style of volleyball, so I think that was good. There are certainly times when it's difficult to play against our opponents, but we are able to show the good qualities of our own game, so we want to continue doing that. (We have a day off in between matches) Today we made some mistakes that we've made before, such as the ball dropping in between, so as we move up to the semifinals and finals, we want to avoid making those kinds of mistakes that we don't usually make. We will improve our communication and the precision of our combinations, and I think it will be important for all of us to attack properly, and our serves will be important, so we want to remember to keep on the offensive. In the qualifying round, there were many cases where the tosses didn't go well, and there were times when I couldn't adjust to them either, but today there were times when they went well, and I want to improve my condition in the remaining two matches and be at my peak for the semifinals and finals. (Looking ahead to the next match) I think it will be a really difficult match, so I want to fight from the start without letting my guard down. Personally, I want to concentrate from the start and play my own style of game with momentum."
