1 Homer in College. Then 41 for the Yankees. | The Story of Ben Rice

In Game 1 of the AL Wild Card Series, Ben Rice went 4-for-5 with two homers, a grand slam and six RBIs against the Red Sox. No Yankee had ever put up four hits and six RBIs in the same postseason game.

Five years ago, almost nobody knew who he was. He hit one home run in his whole college career at Dartmouth. COVID cut his 2020 season short and wiped out 2021, so he went to the draft with 30 college games on his résumé. The Yankees took him in the 12th round, 363rd overall, for $125,000. He hit .171 as a rookie. This year he hit 41 home runs, started the All-Star Game, and joined Aaron Judge as the only Yankees draft picks ever to hit 40 in a season for New York.

This is the story of a kid from Cohasset, Massachusetts who wrote “Yankees Rule” on the Pesky Pole and grew up to torch the Red Sox in October.

Regular-season stats are final; postseason stats are through AL Wild Card Game 1 (Sept. 29, 2026). Sources include MLB Stats API, Baseball Savant, Baseball-Reference and FanGraphs.
