This is where Portland wants to put a Major League ballpark.
I went down to Zidell Yards on Portland’s South Waterfront with Craig Cheek, the founder of the Portland Diamond Project. He’s been working to bring MLB to Portland since 2017. It’s about 33 acres of open riverfront between Tilikum Crossing and the Ross Island Bridge, with downtown a few minutes north and Mt. Hood off in the distance on a clear day.
We walked the site and talked about everything: where home plate would go, the translucent retractable roof, the restaurants, shops and housing planned around the ballpark, the $800 million the state approved (paid back by players’ and team staff’s income taxes), and what Portland needs to land one of the next two expansion teams.
I also get into why a park on the Willamette belongs in the same conversation as Oracle Park, PNC Park and Petco Park, three of the best settings in baseball.
