What does it really take to chase a life in professional surfing, and what happens when one moment threatens to take it all away?
This week on Athletes After Hours, I’m sitting down with professional longboarder Sally Cohen to talk about growing up on the North Shore of Oahu, finding her place in the surf world, and everything that comes with pursuing the sport she loves at the highest level.
Sally opens up about the highs and lows of professional surfing, building her identity both in and out of the water, and the terrifying Surf Ranch accident that left her with a fractured jaw, 30+ stitches, and four lost teeth. We get into the physical and mental process of finding her way back after the accident, facing fear again, and what the experience taught her about resilience and herself.
We also talk about her life beyond competition, cofounding Aokia Swim with her sister, navigating the pressure to have it all figured out, and the person she’s becoming outside of surfing.
From growing up surrounded by the ocean to being forced to rebuild after one of the hardest moments of her life, this conversation is about so much more than surfing. It’s about identity, fear, resilience, and learning how to paddle back out when life knocks you down.
