3 Old Goalies- Season 5 Episode 7: Woody Gibson

There are coaches… there are builders… and then there are legacy-makers.

This episode of 3 Old Goalies steps into rare air.

We sit down with a man whose career isn’t just measured in wins and losses, but in lives impacted, programs built, and a lifelong commitment to serving others. From the sidelines to the classroom to the boardroom, Woody Gibson’s journey is a masterclass in what it truly means to give back to the game that gave you everything.

At High Point University, Gibson didn’t just coach soccer… he helped shape an entire athletic department. Over nearly four decades, he wore just about every hat imaginable: head coach, athletic director, professor, mentor. And somehow, he made each role feel like it was the most important one in the world.

On the field, he built winners.

• 200+ career wins as a men’s soccer coach

• Multiple conference titles

• National tournament appearances year after year

Off the field? That’s where his impact echoes the loudest.

Woody Gibson is the kind of leader who believes players were students first, people always. A coach who taught lessons that lasted longer than any season. A mentor who viewed success not as trophies, but as the ripple effect of investing in others.

And that mindset didn’t stop at soccer.

From helping guide High Point’s transition through multiple NCAA levels… to building academic programs… to serving on national committees… to continuing his work in nonprofit leadership and veteran support… his story is one long, steady drumbeat of service.
