Missouri State head coach Joey Hawkins joins Mark Garland and Jared Perkins on Coach’s Corner to talk about leading his alma mater into the 2027 season. Coming off a 34-21 year and a trip to the Lawrence Regional, Hawkins shares his path from Toronto to Springfield: playing on the Bears’ 2015 super regional team, starting out in junior college coaching, working at Saint Louis University and in the St. Louis Cardinals’ player development system, and becoming just the third head coach in program history. He explains how he blends the legacy of Keith Guttin with the realities of the modern game, how a leadership council inspired by Mike Matheny helps develop the next wave of team leaders, and why “togetherness and identity” set teams apart in the transfer portal era. Hawkins also discusses the depth of Conference USA, the home-field edge at Hammons Field, new facility investments, and what could be the most talented roster in Missouri State history. Stick around for the fun questions, including his dream team to coach, his game-day rituals, and his favorite baseball memory.
