Daily DLP: Morning After Reaction to Lions Win Over Cardinals - Detroit Lions Podcast

The Detroit Lions flattened the Arizona Cardinals 45-21 to move to 3-2, turning a disastrous first quarter into a blowout. A fourth-down strike to Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta ignited seven straight scoring drives, and Detroit’s defense delivered five consecutive three-and-outs while holding Arizona to 37 rushing yards on 16 attempts.
What flipped the game after the ugly start?
A fourth-down conversion to Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta changed everything and sparked the avalanche. Detroit opened with three drives of three plays for minus-7 yards, three plays for minus-3 yards, and three plays for 1 yard, all punts and no penalties, as early runs and protections were stuffed. As Jeff Risdon noted, Arizona’s staff read the early script well, but after that fourth-down completion to Sam LaPorta and the ensuing 15-yard flag for a hit to the head, the Lions ripped off touchdown, touchdown, touchdown, field goal, touchdown, touchdown, touchdown before a late punt.
How did quarterback Jared Goff reset the offense?
Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff settled in, attacked all levels, and never turned the ball over. As Jeff Risdon noted, Jared Goff produced three more touchdowns with no interceptions and punched in a quarterback sneak. Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams made it count with two catches for two touchdowns, including a deep shot that answered doubts about the vertical connection. Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta finished with five catches for 88 yards and a touchdown, repeatedly converting in high-leverage moments. Screens and quick hitters punished soft coverage, and, as Jeff Risdon said, that was exactly what Detroit did to Arizona. Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs also drew a congratulatory message from Barry Sanders after breaking a team record.
What defensive tweaks shut Arizona down?
More man coverage, tighter cushions, and disciplined run fits turned the tide. After Arizona’s 14-play opening march, Detroit forced five straight three-and-outs. The Cardinals ran 16 times for 37 yards, 2.5 yards per carry, because the front stayed gap-sound and kept second-level lanes clean. Detroit Lions linebacker Jack Campbell held up in more man assignments, staying in phase even on the late garbage-time touchdown by Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride. With attention tilted to Detroit Lions edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson, Detroit Lions edge rusher DJ Wonnum capitalized with two sacks, providing the quick interior-adjacent pressure Jeff Risdon has been calling for. Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell still sees work to do, but the structural adjustments worked.
What does 3-2 mean heading into the bye and Green Bay?
Good NFL teams bury inferior opponents, and Detroit did exactly that. The Lions scored 45 points across three quarters while the defense stacked stops, a profile the Detroit Lions Podcast has stressed is sustainable if coverage remains tighter and the rush wins on schedule. As Jeff Risdon emphasized, this performance does not erase early-season issues, but it proves the blueprint: play man more often, close space at 3 to 5 yards, and let the rush hunt. Carry this into the post-bye trip against the Green Bay Packers, and 3-2 becomes a springboard.
