LEADERSHIP SHAKEUP: Islanders IGNITE Debate by Overlooking Mathew Barzal for the "A"

The New York Islanders shake up their leadership group as opening night arrives, with 19-year-old Matthew Schaefer earning the “A” and Brayden Schenn stepping in as alternate captain. With Bo Horvat leading the way and veterans like Kyle Palmieri and Ryan Pulock holding key roles, questions swirl about Mathew Barzal’s omission from the leadership core and his injury status ahead of the season opener against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Gil Martin explores the potential “DeBoer bump” as Peter DeBoer launches his first full season behind the Islanders’ bench, analyzing his history of immediate success with new teams. The episode breaks down the Islanders’ projected lines, injury updates, and the Maple Leafs’ dangerous firepower led by Auston Matthews and John Tavares. Can the Islanders’ revamped structure and renewed leadership rise to the challenge and defy early playoff odds? Don’t miss this comprehensive preview of the season’s first clash.

All this and more on today's Locked On Islanders Podcast with Gil Martin.
