Stefanos Tsitsipas has knocked out Cincinnati champion Arthur Fils in the first round of the 2026 US Open — a player he had NEVER beaten. Full post-match reaction and analysis: is Tsitsipas actually back?
The former World No. 3, now ranked 53rd after an 18-month slide, beat the 10th seed 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-1, 6-4 on his way to striking 50 winners. Fils arrived in New York as one of the form players on tour, having won the Masters 1000 title in Cincinnati barely a week earlier, and he came in 5-0 in the head-to-head. He led by a set and 5-3, and had the second set on his racquet.
Then it turned. Fils tightened serving for the set, double-faulted early in the game, and Tsitsipas broke with a backhand up the line — the point both players pointed to afterwards as the moment the match changed. From there the Greek won the tiebreak and ran away with it, dropping just five games across the final two sets. "I'm a Greek fighter," he said afterwards.
The context is what makes this interesting. Tsitsipas fell outside the top 75 by May 2026, his lowest ranking in years, after a stretch where he struggled to win back-to-back matches. He ended the coaching partnership with his father in late June and brought in Thomas Perrin from the Mouratoglou academy, and says the back problems that disrupted the previous 12 months have eased. This is comfortably the best win of that new chapter.
So: a genuine turning point, or one great night against an opponent who was due a flat day? Full breakdown of the match, everything Tsitsipas said afterwards, and an honest read on whether the revival is real.
