Novak Djokovic has lost in the first round of the US Open to Mariano Navone — and the manner of it has raised a much bigger question. Full post-match reaction and analysis: are Djokovic's Grand Slam winning days behind him?
The 24-time Grand Slam champion and No. 4 seed was beaten 7-6(5), 5-7, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 by the world No. 49 Argentinian on Arthur Ashe Stadium, in a match lasting 4 hours and 36 minutes. Djokovic had never lost before the third round at the US Open in his career, and had not lost in the opening round of ANY Grand Slam in more than 20 years — since the 2006 Australian Open. For the 25-year-old Navone, it is comfortably the biggest win of his life.
But the result is only part of the story. Djokovic was visibly unwell throughout, received treatment, and was sick on court before fading badly across the final two sets. In his press conference he described it as an ongoing problem rather than a one-off: vomiting and throwing up in "pretty much every match this year," followed by cramping, pain, and his back and shoulder giving out. Asked how he fixes it, he said simply, "I don't know" — and added that he is trying to understand "how much longer I can keep going like this," saying it seems more likely he will not be back next year.
He has not announced a retirement and has not given a timeline. But this is the clearest he has been about the physical cost of continuing, and it reframes the question of whether a 25th major is still realistically on the table.
In this video: what actually happened in the match, everything Djokovic said afterwards, how the physical issues have shaped his 2026, and an honest assessment of where his Grand Slam chances stand.
