October baseball is here, and the MLB Wild Card Series wasted no time delivering huge moments! On this episode of **Back to the Bullpen**, Brett Chancey and former MLB pitcher Mike Stanton break down a wild opening day of the 2026 MLB Postseason.
The Atlanta Braves stunned the Philadelphia Phillies 5-3 in Game 1*, powered by an incredible redemption moment from Austin Riley. After a frustrating regular season that included 200 strikeouts, Riley delivered when Atlanta needed him most, crushing a go-ahead three-run homer off *Jhoan Duran’s 99.9 mph fastball in the eighth inning. We discuss Riley’s growing postseason résumé and how one swing completely changed the Braves-Phillies Wild Card Series.
We also dive into Chris Sale’s dominant postseason performance. At 37 years old and making his first playoff start in five years, Sale reached 100 mph against Bryce Harper and struck out nine over 6 1/3 innings. Mike gives his pitcher’s perspective on Sale finding another gear in October, Walt Weiss’ decision to pull him in the seventh, and what this performance could mean for Atlanta moving forward.
Then we head to Houston, where the Chicago White Sox defeated the Houston Astros 6-3 in Game 1 of the AL Wild Card Series. Chicago’s bullpen strategy worked, while Houston’s pitching plan unraveled early when AJ Blubaugh struggled with his command. Rookie Hagen Smith gave Chicago three scoreless innings, Colson Montgomery launched a 432-foot home run, and the White Sox moved one victory away from advancing to the ALDS.
Now the Astros turn to Hunter Brown in a must-win Game 2, while Chicago has Sean Burke ready with an opportunity to end Houston’s season. Can the Astros respond, or will the White Sox finish the upset in Houston?
