Naomi Osaka vs Jasmine Paolini - Preview & Prediction - 2026 WTA Tokyo Open

Naomi Osaka vs Jasmine Paolini — full preview, head-to-head breakdown and prediction for their FIRST ROUND clash at the 2026 Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo. A four-time Grand Slam champion playing at home, against a two-time Slam finalist who has already beaten her once.

This is a brutal opening round for both. Naomi Osaka is the SEVENTH SEED, ranked around World No. 19, and playing in JAPAN — where the emotional weight of every match is different. She's had her best season in years at roughly 29-12: a run to the DC Open semifinals in Washington, a Toronto quarterfinal, and a US Open fourth round that was her deepest Slam run since 2021, ending with a 6-1, 6-4 loss to eventual finalist Elena Rybakina.

Jasmine Paolini is unseeded at around World No. 35 in a season that hasn't matched her peak, roughly 19-16. But this is a player who reached BOTH the Roland-Garros and Wimbledon finals in 2024, and she showed in Ningbo last week that her competitive instincts are intact — escaping from 5-0 DOWN IN THE SECOND SET to beat Anhelina Kalinina.

And crucially: PAOLINI LEADS THE HEAD-TO-HEAD 1-0, having beaten Osaka in three sets in Miami. That's the only time they've played, and it's the reason the bookmakers' edge for Osaka doesn't tell the full story.

Osaka is the favourite — home crowd, higher ranking, better season. But a first round against a former Slam finalist with a win over you already is about as awkward a start as a seed can get. The draw also features defending-era contenders Elena Rybakina, Maja Chwalinska and Alexandra Eala.
