Project Bandit: Can You Game the Golf Handicap System? | Coops

Can you become a golf handicap bandit while playing every round honestly? Has the World Handicap System made it too easy to manipulate your handicap, or is the problem with the way golfers approach the game?

Welcome to Project Bandit.

I'm setting out to record my golf honestly, let my handicap reflect my current form, and discover what happens under the current World Handicap System. No cheating. No manipulating scores. Just golf.

But not everyone thinks it's a good idea.

Joining me is Coach Cooper (@CooperGolf27), a low-handicap golfer who believes the old handicap system did a better job of keeping golfers honest. We debate whether today's system rewards genuine improvement, whether handicap manipulation has become too easy, and whether it's time to rethink how amateur golf competitions work.

In this episode of the Birdie Golf Club Podcast, we discuss:

🏌️ The World Handicap System: Is it fair, or does it make it too easy for golfers to gain an advantage?

⛳ Golf bandits: What's the difference between a genuine high-handicap golfer and someone who takes advantage of the system?

🏆 Competition golf: Should only competition rounds count towards your handicap? Has Stableford scoring had its day?

🇩🇪 Golf in Germany: How does the German golf licence system work, and what can we learn from it?

📉 Project Bandit's future: Coops challenges me to go from a 7 handicap to a 4 the proper way once the experiment ends. Can I do it?

🧠 The mental game: Why thinking less about your score, handling pressure and committing to your shots can transform your golf.

We also discuss outrageous Stableford scores, society golf, handicap allowances, course difficulty and my first iGolf round in 45mph winds.

And Coops has a bold prediction: Project Bandit will fail.

Will he be proved right?
