Alabama and Auburn beefed so hard they stopped playing each other for 41 years, then beefed again
The annual game between the University of Alabama and Auburn University, known as the Iron Bowl, is one of, if not the most intense, feuds in all of sports. For one, college football is professional football in Alabama. As the two major universities in the state, the yearly matchup at season's end sets the stage to potentially claim conference dominance and derail title shots, but more than anything, a win secures bragging rights for the fanbase to stunt on their opposition until they line up again. Great games make for great moments, but this rivalry goes beyond the field. It’s entrenched in a state identity that’s led to government intervention, poisoning of trees, and a whole lot of beef. Cleveland beefed so hard with Carlos Boozer coaches had to apologize and fans egged his house
Carlos Boozer had the opportunity to be LeBron James' co-star, to potentially bring glory and titles and celebratory revelling to the streets of Cleveland. But instead he brought spiteful revelling to Cleveland -- which, turns out, they city was really good at. When Carlos Boozer allegedly went back on his word in 2004, screwing over a Cavaliers team that had tried to increase his salary, the fans showed no mercy. Eggs were thrown. Forbidden words were thrown. And carlosloozer.com received tens of thousands of hits every month. Your beef is served, please enjoy. Michael Jordan drafting Kwame Brown ruined the Wizards
Babe wake up, Michael Jordan drafted Kwame Brown fist overall. It was the first time a high schooler had ever gone number one. What could go wrong? "Nothing!" said Wizards' president of basketball operations, Michael Jordan. (that's not a direct quote, that's an inferred-but-imagined, quote) He was not correct. Look, the 2001 draft was a tricky one, with no consensus number one pick and a bunch of high schoolers. But Jordan made the wrong choice and also was really mean to that wrong choice, making him an even worse choice. He could have traded the pick, Elton Brand was available and in consideration. Jordan could have picked someone else, Pau Gasol was in the 2001 draft! But he didn't. My point being: Michael Jordan drafting Kwame Brown first overall was a big deal. Gary Payton was a huge star in Seattle and an even bigger jerk
Gary Payton, like several of his contemporaries, was an unabashed jerk. He took pride in that. He was nasty to opponents and maniacally hypercompetitive with teammates. All the famous anecdotes about MJ -- the trash talk, the bullying, the ludicrous bets -- they all have counterparts in the lore of Payton. But on the court, things just broke differently for Gary. Obviously, Gary and the Sonics were not as great as MJ and the Bulls, but they weren't that far off. In that way, Gary's time in Seattle and his eventual departure serve as kind of an alternate version of the MJ story. What if you're an extremely good player who's a dick to everyone on your very good team ... but that team DOESN'T win titles? What if you stick around after they stop even contending for titles? What if, uh, the Starbucks guy buys your team and thinks you're the team's foremost problem? And then what if that guy turns out to be a pretty big jerk himself? This is Gary Payton's beef with the Sonics. First, it's ongoing and has no definite endpoint. This subject matter is so rich with strange and funny baseball stories that I could make a hundred episodes if I really wanted to, but ultimately, I think I'll just keep making them until either I get bored or you get bored. Second, I thought it would be fun to offer y'all a peek under the hood as I produce these episodes. I'm doing something I've never done before: I'm sharing my primary research document. Over here in this post (https://www.patreon.com/posts/database-of-weve-142735794?utm_medium=clipboard_copy&utm_source=copyLink&utm_campaign=postshare_creator&utm_content=join_link) you'll find a link to my big Google spreadsheet that lists every single mound-charging incident I've found between 1950 and 2025. It also includes some stray notes I've left as well as links to any video evidence that might be available. Browse it, scrutinize it, steal it, whatever you wanna do. It belongs to everybody.

Steve Spurrier’s beef with UGA is the story of a scorned player who sought revenge as a coach
Few coaches in college football history, or really sports for that matter, can rival Steve Spurrier’s gift of gab. He’s made a ton of enemies, dissing whoever he feels when he gets an opponent in his crosshairs. But when it came to the University of Georgia, Spurrier had a unique disdain for the Dawgs, dating back to the 60s. The hatred ran both ways, as folks in Athens, GA, despised Spurrier, sparking a nearly half-century-long beef.
