The Cincinnati Reds will look to secure a much-needed series win on Sunday afternoon when they wrap up their three-game set against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Great American Ball Park. After snapping a rough stretch with a 2-1 victory on Saturday night, Cincinnati now has a chance to build momentum and finish the homestand on a positive note behind one of their most important arms, Andrew Abbott.

Abbott gets the ball for the Reds as he looks to bounce back from a difficult outing earlier this week against the San Diego Padres. The left-hander enters Sunday with a 4-4 record and a 4.10 ERA, numbers that don’t fully reflect the flashes of dominance he has shown this season. Abbott was an All-Star caliber pitcher for stretches last year, finishing the 2025 season with a strong 2.87 ERA across 29 starts, and the Reds are counting on him to rediscover that form as the team works through a difficult stretch.

In his most recent outing on Monday in San Diego, Abbott allowed three runs on four hits over six innings in a 6-2 Reds loss. While the result was frustrating, the outing itself showed encouraging signs as he was able to limit hard contact and give Cincinnati valuable innings. After the game, Abbott remained confident that the Reds are close to turning things around despite losing seven of their previous eight games entering the weekend.

“We haven’t been playing our best ball, but we’re all showing up,” Abbott said this week. “I think it’s going to take maybe one extra play, one extra effort, one extra thing to get us over the hump. Once we get over that, then we’ll just start going back to how we were playing.”

The Reds will face Arizona right-hander Zac Gallen, who is also searching for consistency after a difficult start to the 2026 season. Gallen, a former National League All-Star and Cy Young finalist, enters Sunday with a 3-5 record and an elevated 5.43 ERA. After beginning the season in solid form, Gallen has struggled badly over the last several weeks, posting a 7.04 ERA in May before carrying that slump into June, where he currently owns a 6.97 ERA through two starts.

That could create an opportunity for a Cincinnati offense that has struggled for consistency recently but showed signs of life on Saturday.

One of the biggest bright spots for the Reds has been Noelvi Marte, who continued his strong resurgence by hitting his second home run in as many games on Saturday night. Marte delivered the game-winning solo homer in the eighth inning and continues to look much more comfortable at the plate since being recalled from Triple-A Louisville on June 3.

Since returning to the majors, Marte has credited Hall of Famer Barry Larkin for helping him make adjustments, and those changes appear to be paying immediate dividends. If Marte stays hot, he could become a major factor in helping Cincinnati’s offense regain its early-season form.

Saturday’s win was important not just because it ended another losing stretch, but because it reminded the Reds they are still capable of playing clean, winning baseball. Cincinnati’s bullpen delivered several key shutdown innings, while the offense capitalized late when given an opportunity.

With Abbott on the mound, Marte swinging a hot bat, and a chance to win the series at home, Sunday feels like an important opportunity for the Reds to begin shifting momentum back in the right direction as they try to climb out of their recent slump.
