The Cincinnati Reds enter a critical week of the 2026 season searching for answers after another frustrating weekend at Great American Ball Park. Cincinnati dropped the rubber match of its series against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday, falling 5-3 and continuing what has become a troubling stretch for a team that looked like one of baseball’s biggest surprises just six weeks ago. The loss marked the Reds’ fifth consecutive series defeat and pushed Cincinnati further below .500 at 33-37.
For much of April, the Reds looked like legitimate contenders in the National League Central. Terry Francona’s club got off to one of the best starts in baseball and consistently found ways to win close games. But since early May, the season has taken a sharp turn. Cincinnati has struggled to hold late leads, the bullpen has become increasingly unreliable, and the offense has once again fallen into extended stretches of inconsistency.
The biggest concern right now is the offense. The Reds have struggled to score consistently throughout June, ranking near the bottom of Major League Baseball in several offensive categories. Their batting average this month has fallen significantly, while strikeouts have continued piling up at an alarming rate. The lack of consistent production has put enormous pressure on both the starting rotation and an already overworked bullpen.
Injuries have also played a major role in Cincinnati’s recent struggles, particularly the absence of superstar shortstop Elly De La Cruz. De La Cruz has been sidelined with a hamstring injury, but there has finally been encouraging news. Recent imaging came back positive, and the Reds believe De La Cruz is now nearing a return. His presence could provide a major boost to an offense that has badly missed his impact at the top of the lineup.
Another storyline developing around the organization is the Reds continuing to search for depth help. Cincinnati recently signed outfielder Sam Haggerty to a minor league contract, adding another experienced option to an outfield group that has been inconsistent throughout the season. Haggerty brings versatility, switch-hitting ability, speed, and a strong track record against left-handed pitching. The move signals that the front office is actively looking for ways to improve organizational depth as the trade deadline slowly approaches.
The bullpen remains perhaps the biggest question mark on the roster. Over the last several weeks, the Reds have repeatedly seen late leads disappear, turning what should have been wins into painful losses. Several relievers have been forced into higher leverage situations than originally expected, and the lack of consistency late in games has directly contributed to the team’s recent slide.
There is still some reason for optimism. Rookie infielder Sal Stewart continues to look like one of the organization’s brightest young building blocks and has delivered several clutch moments recently. Left-hander Andrew Abbott has quietly been one of Cincinnati’s most reliable starting pitchers, continuing to give the Reds quality innings nearly every time he takes the mound. Top pitching prospect Chase Burns also remains one of the most exciting long-term pieces in the organization.
The schedule, however, will not get easier. The Reds open a new series Monday night against the New York Mets, beginning a difficult stretch that also includes matchups against several playoff contenders before the All-Star break. Cincinnati desperately needs to stop the recent momentum from spiraling further in the wrong direction.
At 33-37, the Reds are reaching a pivotal point in their season. The next few weeks could determine whether the front office becomes aggressive buyers at the trade deadline or begins asking tougher questions about the roster’s long-term outlook.
