Parker Valby returned to outdoor track racing for the first time in 19 months at the LA Track Fest, winning the 5000m in 14:49.41 for a personal best, run solo from 2200 meters out, on even 70-71 second laps the entire way.
The backstory: Valby signed a massive New Balance contract in October 2024, moved to New Balance Boston under Mark Coogan, broke the navicular bone in her foot, and said she wasn't healthy physically or mentally. She went back to Gainesville to work with college coach Will Palmer, and is now training under Joe Bosshard at Team Boss alongside Emma Coburn, who was the first to congratulate her after the race.
In this video, we break down what the 14:49 actually tells us: Why a solo even-paced time trial probably understates her current fitness, why a paced Diamond League race could put her in 14:35-14:40 range this season, and why the stride looked cleaner and more relaxed than anything we saw from her in 2024.
