When you are stretched wide and the shot is genuinely difficult, any ball you
make is a good one, but the best one does three things at once. Hit it high, hit
it deep, and hit it cross court.
The height buys you time to get back and respond. The depth keeps your opponent
away from the court, so they cannot step in and put a wet blanket over the point
while you are still recovering.
Cross court is the one that sounds like a detail, and it is the one about your
own feet rather than your opponent. A cross court reply means your recovery
position is on the same side of the court you are already standing on, so you do
not have to run the whole width of the court just to get back into the point.
Put the three together and you have neutralized a point you were losing, which
is a real accomplishment considering how much trouble you were in a moment
earlier. So the next time you get stretched, do not try to do anything clever
with it. High, deep, cross court, and you are back to even.
