Her position is textbook. It is textbook for a situation that stopped existing a moment earlier. She has set up cross court of her opponent, which is exactly where you want to be when someone is hitting a ground stroke from behind the baseline. From there the down the line ball travels straight at you, and the cross court angle is the one that drags you off the court, so splitting it the way she has leaves her opponent even space on either side. All of that reasoning is sound. It is also obsolete, because he is not behind the baseline anymore. He has moved twenty feet forward to get to this ball, and the shot he is about to hit is an approach. That one fact flips the geometry of the court. For a player coming forward, cross court turns into a detriment and down the line turns into the asset, because it lets him set up on the same side he just hit to instead of running all the way across. Cross court is exactly where she is standing. The moment your opponent steps inside the court, stop asking where you would stand against a rally ball and start asking where you would stand against someone coming to the net.
