Esme Morgan and Andi Sullivan spoke with reporters after Washington Spirit’s road loss to Kansas City Current, both defenders framing it as a strong defensive performance undercut by a rough five-minute stretch that decided the match.
Morgan and Sullivan pointed out that Kansas City managed just a handful of clear looks all night, with both goals stemming from isolated lapses rather than a breakdown in the overall structure, and credited the group for limiting a team that rarely gets shut down like that.
They broke down the technical sloppiness that crept in during the first half under Kansas City’s high press, the halftime adjustment to switch the ball faster between center backs to find space in the wide areas, and the composure that let the Spirit control the second half despite trailing.
Sullivan also detailed how her role shifted after Hal Hershfelt was forced off, explaining the adjustments needed to anchor the defense behind Mel and Leicy as they pushed into more advanced, attacking positions.
Both closed by reflecting on how quickly things can unravel in this league, and the mentality needed to reset and fight for control after a chaotic stretch of play.
