The Cincinnati Reds fell 5-3 to the Arizona Diamondbacks on August 23, 2026, in a hard-fought series finale at Chase Field in Phoenix. The loss dropped the Reds to 62-69 while improving the Diamondbacks to 69-62, allowing Arizona to claim the series and stay within striking distance of the National League wild-card race.

For much of the afternoon the Reds looked in control. Starter Andrew Abbott worked efficiently through the early innings, keeping Arizona’s potent lineup in check. The Cincinnati offense provided him a cushion in the third. Elly De La Cruz led off with a sharp double into the left-field corner. Sal Stewart followed with a single to right that plated De La Cruz. Dane Myers reached base, and Eugenio Suárez delivered a two-run single to left, pushing the lead to 3-0. Those three runs would be all the Reds managed on the day despite collecting eight hits.

Arizona chipped away in the sixth. Corbin Carroll tripled and scored on Gabriel Moreno’s sacrifice fly, cutting the deficit to 3-1. The decisive explosion came in the bottom of the seventh. Abbott, who had limited the Diamondbacks to five hits and one walk through six frames while striking out six, suddenly found trouble. Soft singles and a walk to James McCann—who was attempting to bunt—loaded the bases with nobody out. Manager Terry Francona turned to reliever Luis Mey, but the damage was already set in motion.

Lars Nootbaar grounded out to the pitcher, allowing Tim Tawa to score and making it 3-2. Ildemaro Vargas then ripped a two-run triple that rolled all the way to the right-center field wall, scoring Jordan Lawlar and McCann and giving Arizona its first lead at 4-3. Carroll followed with a sacrifice fly that brought Vargas home, completing a four-run frame and putting the Diamondbacks ahead 5-3. Jonathan Loáisiga earned the win with a clean inning of relief, and Kevin Ginkel closed it out by striking out Tyler Stephenson with runners on base for his second save of the season.

Abbott absorbed the loss, charged with four runs on seven hits over six innings. The Reds left a host of opportunities unconverted, going just 2-for-9 with runners in scoring position. Defensively they were clean, committing no errors, but the late bullpen collapse proved costly. Arizona committed one error yet capitalized on every chance once the seventh inning opened up.

The defeat marked Cincinnati’s fourth series loss in its last five and opened a challenging nine-game road trip. For the Diamondbacks the rally kept them two games behind the San Diego Padres for the final wild-card berth and provided momentum heading into the stretch run. Vargas’s go-ahead triple stood as the clear turning point of an otherwise tightly contested contest that showcased both teams’ ability to manufacture runs and the fine margins that decide late-season baseball. The Reds will look to regroup quickly, while Arizona can take satisfaction in a hard-earned comeback victory that reinforced its playoff aspirations.
