On October 16, 1990, Eric Davis launched a two-run home run off Oakland Athletics ace Dave Stewart in the bottom of the first inning of Game 1 at Riverfront Stadium, giving the Cincinnati Reds an early 2-0 lead.
The A’s entered the World Series as the defending champions and heavy favorites, having won 103 games during the regular season.
But Davis and the Reds had other plans.
Cincinnati went on to win Game 1 by a score of 7-0 behind a complete-game shutout from José Rijo.
The Reds never looked back, sweeping Oakland in four games to capture their fifth World Series championship and their first since 1976.
One swing from Eric Davis helped set the stage for one of the greatest upsets in World Series history.
