The Wild Horse Crisis in the American West | Restoring Habitat in Wyoming
General Sports
Wild horses across the American West have become one of the most significant wildlife and habitat management challenges facing western rangelands today.
In this episode, Robbie sits down with Art Lawson, Director of Shoshone and Arapaho Fish and Game in Wyoming, to discuss the growing impact of feral horse populations on wildlife, ecosystems, and native habitat across the western range.
Lawson shares the remarkable efforts undertaken in the Wind River Valley, where the council, local community, and wildlife management teams worked together—despite limited funding—to address the issue. Through an ambitious management effort, nearly 7,800 feral horses were rounded up, allowing thousands of acres of habitat to begin recovering for native wildlife and restoring balance to the landscape.
Their story highlights the difficult realities of wild horse management in the West, and demonstrates what can happen when communities come together to address complex conservation challenges with practical, science-based solutions.
