Payton Starwalt broke the Oregon single-season record with 136 made threes, dropped 51 in a game, and won a state title pulling up from 34 feet. So I went to Philomath, Oregon to find out exactly how she and her dad Ryan trained that range, from the ground up, starting at age 8.
We get into the 70% rule that decides which shots are game ready, the step back and side step progressions, the "nines" drill, and the constraint work that makes deep range feel normal: closeouts with a stick, dodge balls, strobe goggles, and heavy-implement training borrowed from baseball. Payton also breaks down how she attacks face-guarding defenses and the one mechanic she says unlocks distance shooting. Next stop: D1 basketball at Murray State.
