If you swim breaststroke, there is a very high chance this one mistake is slowing you down: stopping and hanging out in your breathing position.
Even if you have a great catch and a powerful kick, stalling at the top of your stroke will ruin your speed.
Here is why you need to breathe and get out:
The Resistance Trap: Right as you come up for air, your chest is fully exposed to the water. In this position, your body is acting like a massive parachute.
Don't Linger: The water is hitting you right in the chest, so the longer you spend taking your breath, the more forward resistance you create.
Snap Forward: Your goal is to come up, grab your air, and get out of that position as quickly as possible! Drive your arms forward, bury your head, and snap back into a tight streamline to glide.
I put together a quick drill progression to help you lock in this exact timing so you can eliminate that dead spot in your stroke.
