Bengals Rumors After LOSS To Steelers + Joe Burrow's Fumble & Massive Special Teams Problems

The Bengals’ 30-27 loss to the Steelers on Sunday came down to a handful of mistakes, but two special teams errors and Joe Burrow’s late fumble were the defining moments. Cincinnati had opportunities to win throughout the afternoon, but mistakes in all three phases ultimately cost the Bengals a chance to leave Pittsburgh undefeated.

The special teams mistakes were especially damaging because both directly contributed to Pittsburgh points. Cincinnati was leading 20-17 in the third quarter when Cedric Johnson was flagged for roughing the punter, extending a Steelers drive that otherwise would have ended. Pittsburgh took advantage, driving for a touchdown and reclaiming the lead.

Later, with Cincinnati ahead 27-24, another special teams mistake proved costly. Ke’Shawn Williams muffed a punt, giving Pittsburgh possession at the Bengals’ 14-yard line. The Steelers could not reach the end zone, but Chris Boswell converted a 36-yard field goal to tie the game. Those two mistakes gave Pittsburgh valuable extra opportunities and ultimately helped produce 10 points.

Burrow then had one final chance to change the outcome. After Pittsburgh took a 30-27 lead, Cincinnati moved the ball into Steelers territory with less than a minute remaining. A field goal could have tied the game, while a few more completions might have created an opportunity to win. Instead, Burrow was sacked by Derrick Harmon with 53 seconds left and fumbled. Pittsburgh recovered, allowing the Steelers to run out the clock.

The fumble was particularly painful because Burrow had played well for most of the game. He finished with 282 passing yards and three touchdowns without an interception, repeatedly making big plays when Cincinnati needed them.

In the end, the Bengals didn’t lose because of one mistake. But the roughing-the-punter penalty, muffed punt and Burrow’s late fumble were the critical errors in a game decided by three points. Against a division rival, Cincinnati simply gave Pittsburgh too many opportunities to capitalize.
