Hit your approach shot at a sharp cross court angle and you have moved the entire
point to the far side of the court while you are still standing on the near side. Now
you have to run after it, arriving late at a net position you chose to make harder for
yourself.

Count what that one shot cost: you handed your opponent extra court to aim at, you
left yourself exposed while you cover the distance, and you made it likely that the
volley you finally reach is the one on your weaker side. Three disadvantages, bought
with a single shot that felt aggressive.

There is a version where it is correct. If court coverage is a genuine strength of
yours and a genuine weakness of theirs, the arithmetic changes and the angle becomes
the right play. Absent that, approach down the line. Same aggression, except you
finish the shot already standing where the next one is going.
