WHITLOCK: Red Sox Must NAME Garrett Whitlock as Future Closer After Club Option DECISION

The Boston Red Sox lock in bullpen strength by exercising Garrett Whitlock’s option—should he be the closer of the future? Craig Breslow’s decisive roster moves spark debate as the team balances short-term performance and long-term depth ahead of the 40-man deadline.

The conversation focused on Whitlock’s standout 2026 stats, Aroldis Chapman’s ninth-inning grip, and whether Whitlock’s command and composure make him the heir apparent. Key topics include Tsung-Che Cheng’s trade to the Detroit Tigers for cash considerations, what his departure signals for infield versatility, and which fringe players may be next as Boston navigates a roster crunch. The discussion explored the front office’s calculated risks, the value of relief pitching, and what these under-the-radar moves reveal about Breslow’s offseason strategy. Will the Red Sox have enough depth to withstand inevitable injuries and contend in 2027?
