Blackburn Rovers have reached NOW OR NEVER territory — and the pressure is on Rudy Gestede and the club to deliver.
Saturday's 2-1 defeat to QPR exposed a problem supporters have been warning about for months.
At 1-1, QPR were able to turn to their bench, make changes and find a winner. Tony Mowbray looked at his own options and simply didn't have the senior players available to do the same.
With around ten players unavailable, youngsters with little or no first-team experience filling the bench and the first real run of three-game weeks arriving, Mowbray needs help.
And the transfer window closes at 11pm on Tuesday.
The frustrating thing is that the core of this Blackburn Rovers side looks capable of having a very good Championship season.
The players aren't the problem.
But without enough quality and experience around them, Rovers risk wasting what could otherwise be a very good season — and putting an impossible workload on the players Mowbray does have available.
The warning signs were there last season. They weren't properly addressed.
Now the situation looks even worse.
Mike Beaty and Mark Hitchen discuss the QPR defeat, Blackburn's alarming lack of squad depth and why the next day could have a huge impact on the direction of Rovers' season.
Last week we asked whether Rudy Gestede has actually got more right than he's got wrong at Blackburn.
Now comes perhaps his biggest test.
Can Rovers get the FOUR or so additions this squad desperately needs before the window shuts?
And while all of that is happening… there are two rather important football matches to play.
Rovers travel to Lincoln City on Tuesday night before attention turns to Saturday and a huge local clash at Deepdale:
PRESTON NORTH END v BLACKBURN ROVERS.
Both clubs have problems. Both desperately need something to get their seasons moving — and a huge Rovers following will make the short trip to Deepdale.
