Most golfers get frustrated on the course because they think a good shot should be much closer to the hole than it actually is.

In this video, I break down 4 eye-opening PGA Tour and amateur golf statistics that completely redefine what a “good” golf shot actually looks like. Using real data from ShotLink, Arccos, and Shot Scope, you’ll see how proximity, driving distance, wedge play, and putting performance compare across PGA Tour players, scratch golfers, 10 handicaps, and 20 handicaps.

One example: from 100 yards in the fairway, a good shot for a scratch golfer is about 25 feet from the hole — far longer than most golfers expect. Misunderstanding numbers like this leads to frustration, poor strategy, and unrealistic expectations on the golf course.

By the end of this video, you’ll learn:

• What a good approach shot actually looks like from different distances
• Why most golfers misjudge their iron and wedge performance
• The real scoring difference between driving, approach play, wedges, and putting
• How understanding these stats can help you make smarter decisions and lower your scores

When you start judging your shots by realistic benchmarks instead of unrealistic expectations, golf becomes less frustrating and a lot more strategic.

If you want to go deeper on strategy, expectations, and practice, check out my book The Four Foundations of Golf, linked below.

Who am I?

My name is Jon Sherman 👋. I'm a best-selling author, PGA Tour coach, and a golfer just like you. I aim to help golfers of all levels lower their scores and enjoy the game more, but without talking about the golf swing. I focus on four topics - expectation management, strategy, practice, and the mental game. I'll share some of my best advice on this channel in an easy-to-understand, actionable format.
