The secret to swimming faster!
The secret to swimming faster requires zero equipment, zero cost, and takes about 10 seconds to learn.
Close your fist.
That is it. That is the drill.
Most swimmers pull through the water using only their hand as a paddle. It feels natural because your hand is what you see. But your forearm is twice the size of your hand — and when you learn to use it, everything changes.
The fist drill forces your hand out of the equation. With a closed fist you cannot rely on your fingers. Your forearm has to engage. Your elbow has to stay high. Your catch happens earlier. And suddenly you are pulling with your entire arm instead of just your fingertips.
Do one length with your fist closed. Then open your hand.
The water will feel completely different. That feeling is what an efficient pull is supposed to feel like — and once you feel it, you cannot unfeel it.
The fist drill takes 30 seconds to learn and a lifetime to master. Do it every warm-up. Every single session.
