Legendary Volleyball Match | Japan vs France | Men's VNL 2024 Final

Legendary Volleyball Match | Japan vs France | Men's VNL 2024 Final. Japan and France delivered a thrilling battle for gold in the Men’s Volleyball Nations League 2024 final on June 30 at Atlas Arena in Łódź, Poland. France claimed the title with a hard-fought 3–1 victory (25–23, 18–25, 25–23, 25–23), securing their second VNL crown while Japan celebrated a historic first silver medal in the competition.

The scoreline tells only part of the story. France won every one of their three sets by just two points, while Japan dominated the second set to keep their championship dream alive. Japan even finished with more total points, 94–93, but France delivered in the decisive moments to turn an incredibly close contest into gold.

Japan captain Yuki Ishikawa led his team with 17 points, all from attacks. Yuji Nishida followed with 11 points, while Kento Miyaura came off the bench to contribute ten, making them Japan’s three leading scorers in the final. Alongside setter Masahiro Sekita and libero Tomohiro Yamamoto, Japan’s stars showcased the speed, defensive determination and creative volleyball that made their 2024 campaign unforgettable.

Jean Patry was France’s biggest attacking weapon, finishing with a match-high 24 points, including 20 attack kills, three blocks and one ace. Kevin Tillie provided a crucial lift from the bench with 13 points, while Yacine Louati added 11. Tillie replaced Trévor Clévenot during the second set and finished with 12 successful attacks from 20 attempts. Quentin Jouffroy also made important contributions with his blocking and serving, helping France close out the championship.

Japan reached the final after finishing the preliminary phase with nine wins and three defeats, then sweeping Canada in the quarterfinals and Slovenia in the semifinals. France’s road was considerably tougher. After an 8–4 preliminary campaign, they survived five-set battles against Italy and Poland, including an extraordinary 18–16 deciding set against the hosts in the semifinals.

The final also gave France a chance to respond to Japan’s remarkable comeback just eight days earlier. In their preliminary-round meeting in Manila, Japan recovered from two sets down to win 3–2. This time, however, France held their nerve when the trophy was on the line.

Although Japan fell one step short of gold, their silver medal improved on their historic bronze from 2023 and marked their first second-place finish at a major global tournament since the 1977 World Cup. Japan finished the VNL ranked second in the world, while France climbed to fourth ahead of the Paris Olympics.

Antoine Brizard was named VNL 2024 MVP and Best Setter, while Jean Patry earned Best Opposite. Yuki Ishikawa was selected as one of the Best Outside Hitters, and Tomohiro Yamamoto received the Best Libero award. Nicolas Le Goff, Tomasz Fornal and Jakub Kochanowski completed the tournament’s Dream Team. Poland secured bronze with a straight-sets victory over Slovenia.
